Celine Filbee

Performing at Signs Lounge Bar

Friday 1st November 6 - 7pm

Celine Filbee

Guitar – Ukulele – Vocal

Celine has lurked on the fringes of musical creativity for years, her career kicked off in the UK where she fronted Celine Filbee and the Fatboy Blues Band, with guitarist brother Dylan filling the Fatboy role. She was part of acoustic folk act Something Going On led by songwriter Michael O'Dempsey, with Pip Collins and Jeff Walker. During this time Celine promoted acts and ran venues, including a blues club and worked with composer Bob Morgan to create an improvised musical performance to the silent movie Pandora’s Box.

In the late 90’s she returned to Taranaki and became known for hosting epic parties centred around live music and was well known for slipping a musical angle in many of the function she has presented while working as an event manager. Celine has invested plenty of energy championing the sport of singing songs and drinking beer in her front room, whilst fiddling about on piano, guitar, bass, ukulele and doing the occasional gig. This ramped up in 2016 when she teamed up with Karen Clark to form Glorybox, the duo delivered strong songs, evocative harmonies, plenty of strings and a bit of a laugh for several years in Taranaki and Kapiti.   More recently she is now part of the piano led duo Nana & Petal with Paul Adams, contributing guitar and vocals, while Paul pins down the groove with his masterful piano chops.

Over the years Celine’s has made sporadic solo appearances, but has recently honed a solo act fitting her persona and eclectic musical bent. It comprises a mix of the self-penned songs, many by the prolific O’Dempsey and some co-written by the pair and brother Dylan, she also has a penchant for song written by other friends and NZ songwriters. She includes a host of obscure covers by ballsy women such as Maren Morris, Kasey Chambers, Brandy Clark or the Uppity Blues Women, and lesser known compositions from songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Paulo Nutini and the blistering bluesman Lloyd Spiegel which all get a bit of a pared back treatment to suit Celine’s guitar style. She spans blues, folk, and country with an arresting vocal style, with the charisma and storytelling magnetism to carry even the most sparse song.
